Another season of Sherman’s Hot Summer Nights is in the books, and what a great series it’s been! The variety of musical entertainment has brought something for everyone, it seems, for the young to young-at-heart. During June and July, our community enjoyed the rhythms of Cuba, the pop sounds of Motown, and artists from country to classic rock.
Hot Summer Nights began in 1995, and 24 seasons later, Mayor David Plyler and Main Street/Tourism Director Sarah McRae, --along with many key partners -- have elevated the annual series to a new level. Already they are looking forward to the silver anniversary season in 2019, with some brand new additions to the line-up and an extended season. All this underscores the City of Sherman’s commitment to accessible, live music for its residents and Sherman’s neighbors throughout the North Texas/Southern Oklahoma region.
When HSN winds down each year, that means the school year is right around the corner. Children’s summer camps and workshops are in their final weeks. Sherman High School’s band students are back in action. Can football games and autumn weather really be that close? (We’ll save the debate on cooler weather for another day.)
A regular beat, though, in the pulse of the calendar year is the flurry of planning for Sherman’s annual Arts Fest. In 2018, the City’s largest arts-focused event is set for September 15 in the blocks surrounding Kidd-Key Auditorium and Ballroom. Vendor applications are available now, and visitors to this year’s fair can expect some new treats to liven the day.
For those looking for a last-minute summer getaway, why not drop in to the Honey McGee Playhouse for two weekends of Magic & Jazz, this year’s summer musical benefit for the Sherman Community Players (Aug. 3-5 and Aug. 10-12). The show will definitely take you away from the usual routine!
Lastly, the Sherman Chamber is sponsoring “Live and Local,” three local bands in concert during August to extend the fun of summer just a bit longer. Keep checking the ShermanLive calendar and make some time to Find Your Art!
